  1. I was lucky to find a golden oak at a Washington state nursery about five years ago, noted that the local deer did not seem interested, and left it uncaged. Last year, after I applied a thick coat of mulch, the deer discovered and savaged it, leaving torn branches and leaves scattered several feet around. I immediately fenced it, allowed it ample room to spread, and it again seems to be thriving. It will never again have the beautiful spiderweb like branches and large crunchy leaves, but it will be a valued shrub for my landscape. The problem is, I cannot find a replacement; the nursery where I bought it no longer keeps it, and a second nursery which had it briefly tried but failed to propagate it. I figure I must have one of the relatively few golden oaks in the country, or at least in the Pacific Northwest. It’s an extraordinary tree. (November, 2023)
